Samsung just announced two brand new phablets, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+, during a special event in New York City. Unlike previous years, Samsung decided to push forward the announcement of the new Galaxy Note flagships by more than two weeks to make sure the phone hits stores before the next-gen iPhones arrive. And Samsung will indeed start Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ sales about a month before the iPhone 6s launches.

Moments ago, Samsung took the wraps off of its next-generation phablets for 2015. The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ are Samsung’s first phablets made from premium materials that compliment their gorgeous displays and cutting-edge internal components. They’re truly stunning devices, and they can both be considered best-in-class.
The S6 edge+ features an interesting design, just like the S6 edge it’s based on, but it’s clearly the less appealing of the two phones. It’s a Galaxy S6 edge… but bigger. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Note 5 sports a fantastic design and special features that only Samsung’s Note lineup can offer. Despite the fact that Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus is the best-selling phablet in the world, some might say Samsung’s Note lineup offers a superior phablet experience.

On Thursday morning at a live Unpacked event in New York City, Samsung unveiled its latest slate of phablets: the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. These two large devices will supplement the S6 and S6 edge which released in the spring, giving Samsung a sizable lineup to stock on store shelves over the holiday season.

Let’s just begin with the conclusion: Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 5 is the best Android phablet the world has ever seen. The hardware is exquisite, the software is improved in every way compared to last year’s model, and the newly enhanced S Pen stylus makes it remarkably easy to be productive.
And now, the problem: I’m not sure any of that will matter when it comes to stopping Samsung’s current sales decline.

The Galaxy S6 edge is a curious phone. Some people don’t understand why Samsung even released the handset to begin with, so I did my best to explain it in a recent article. Long story short, the S6 edge offers differentiation in a market full of boring phone designs that look nearly identical. Samsung also enjoys wider margins with the edge, which is crucial since Samsung’s smartphone margins are quite low.
According to Samsung, demand for the Galaxy S6 edge was so strong that the company couldn’t even build the phone fast enough to keep up with demand. Curiously, however, the company dropped prices on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge right after it made that claim.
For Samsung’s sake, I hope that demand was indeed strong, because the company now plans to release what is essentially the same exact phone, but a bit bigger.

It’s not exactly a secret at this point: Samsung is about to unveil its brand new Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ phablets. The company went back to the drawing board with its Galaxy S lineup earlier this year and designed the Galaxy S6 from scratch. Well, OK, so maybe it had a little inspiration. But the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge marked the first time Samsung launched phones with sleek designs and premium materials to match their class-leading displays and killer performance.
Now, its time to see if Samsung plans to be just as original with this year’s flagship phablets as it was with its flagship smartphones.
