The coronavirus has completely turned life in the United States upside down. School years have been suspended, large cities like Los Angeles and Chicago are still in full-on lockdown mode, and typically bustling places like Times Square in New York City remain hauntingly empty.

With millions of people now confined to their homes for what could very well be weeks on end, it’s only natural for boredom to eventually sink in. The good news, though, is that we live in a highly connected world and we now have access to more media content than ever before. And some media entities, in an effort to make the quarantine experience that much easier, have started making premium media content available for free.

Next-gen Apple TV with more storage and new features may be in the works

%name Next gen Apple TV with more storage and new features may be in the works by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple may announce a new Apple TV with more storage and a faster processor later this year. Apple TV was last updated more than two years ago.
  • tvOS will reportedly include a new Kids Mode feature that will allow parents to restrict access to certain programs and specific apps.
  • Apple will likely introduce tvOS at WWDC this year, an event which is now an online-only event due to the coronavirus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

According to a new post from Hebrew-language site The Verifier, Apple is planning to add some new Apple TV features to tvOS in the near future. Like any Apple rumor, you’ll want to take this report with a grain of salt, though it’s worth noting that the site has previously provided accurate information about upcoming iOS features.

That disclaimer aside, the site claims that the next tvOS release will allow Apple TV owners to create a dedicate Kids Mode which will naturally come with restrictions as to what type of content can be selected and viewed. Parents will also be able to restrict access to specified programs. Additionally, entire apps can be blocked. So, for example, parents can prevent their kids from even opening up apps like YouTube or HBO in the first place, if they so choose.

%name Verizon to give subscribers 15GB of free data during the coronavirus outbreak by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • As the novel coronavirus pandemic rages on, Verizon announced a plan to give subscribers 15GB of additional data for free.
  • The free 15GB allotment goes into effect today and will end on April 30.
  • Verizon also said that its waiving overage charges and will not terminate individuals for lack of payment.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With the coronavirus forcing millions of Americans into lockdown mode, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is how close they are to exceeding their allotted mobile data for the month. This is a particularly pressing issue given that mobile data usage is likely at an all-time high these days as the number of quarantined Americans mushrooms with each passing week.

The good news, though, is that Verizon today announced a few initiatives designed to alleviate that worry. In a press release published a short while ago, Verizon said that its waiving overage charges for residential and small business wireless customers whose economic situation has been adversely impacted by the coronavirus.

10 movies and shows to watch on Netflix before they leave in April

%name 10 movies and shows to watch on Netflix before they leave in April by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Netflix is losing 42 movies and shows from its streaming service in April 2020.
  • The Shawshank Redemption, starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, is the biggest loss in April.
  • Some of the other departing highlights include GoodFellas, Rosemary’s Baby, and Blade Runner.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With social distancing now in full effect and my personal quarantine in full swing, I’ve been streaming more TV shows and movies over the last two weeks than I had all year. Shows that I once might have scrolled past are now suddenly looking far more interesting than they once did, as I’m becoming less picky the longer I’m stuck inside. I imagine that many of you are feeling the same way, which is why it’s hard to believe Netflix is actually going to take content away from us throughout the next month (as it always does, since that’s how licensing works).

The good news is that, unlike in March, the TV shows and movies being removed in April aren’t all that enticing. Sure, losing The Shawshank Redemption hurts, but nothing else on the list we’ve put together will have you rushing to your TV. That said, this is your last chance to stream them for the foreseeable future.

Siri now lets iPhone users ask questions about coronavirus symptoms

%name Siri now lets iPhone users ask questions about coronavirus symptoms by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Apple updates Siri so that it can help diagnose people exhibiting coronavirus symptoms.
  • Siri’s answers come from the US Public Health Service and the CDC.
  • Apple is also donating millions of masks to healthcare providers to help them treat the coronavirus pandemic safely and more effectively.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With so much misinformation about the coronavirus swirling about, Apple recently updated Siri to better help inform users who think they might be exhibiting coronavirus symptoms. And while this might seem pointless given the plethora of information available via a quick Google search, you’d be surprised at some of the conspiracy theories, fake cures, and downright misleading information being passed around online and presented as factual.

In light of that, iPhone users can now ask, “Hey Siri, do I have the coronavirus?” whereupon they’ll be prompted to answer a series of yes or no questions to better “help you understand your situation.” Apple makes a point of noting that the answers it provides come from the US Public Health Service in concert with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

2020 Olympics officially postponed due to coronavirus pandemic

  • The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, set to begin on July 24th, have officially been postponed.
  • This is the first time in history that the Olympic Games have been postponed, although they have been canceled due to wars, including once during WW1 and twice during WWII.
  • The International Olympic Committee will make a decision about when the 2020 Olympics will take place in the next four weeks, but moving to 2021 seems likely.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Every major event or gathering set to take place in the next few months has either been canceled or postponed, but there was one holdout that seemingly refused to accept reality: The Olympics. Athletes, coaches, and fans alike had all been waiting on the inevitable announcement from the committee, and after weeks of waiting, the announcement finally came on Monday, March 23rd. Speaking with USA Today, Veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound confirmed that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed.

Free app lets you watch Netflix with friends while you’re quarantined

%name Free app lets you watch Netflix with friends while you’re quarantined by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • People across the country and around the world are quarantining themselves right now in an effort to prevent COVID-19 infections and stop the novel coronavirus from spreading.
  • More and more people in the United States are finally beginning to take the threat seriously, which means self-quarantining and potentially not seeing any friends or family for a month or even longer.
  • Staying connected is of the utmost importance, and there’s a nifty free Netflix app that offers a smart way to virtually hang out with friends and family while enjoying a shared experience.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Does anyone remember calling your friends on the phone and chatting about shows while TV together? I used to do it all the time, and hopefully I’m not dating myself too much with that admission. It was a great way to connect and have a shared experience despite being apart. It was also a great way to piss off your parents since you would be hogging the phone for hours at a time.

In an age where everything and everyone is always connected, people don’t often share experiences like that. After all, younger generations rarely watch live TV these days. Instead, people have their streaming services of choice and they watch content on demand whenever they want to. Then, after they’re done watching, they might chat about the show with friends and family at some later point in time. There’s obviously nothing wrong with that, but the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak changes things a bit. Businesses are closed, schools are closed, and everyone is being asked to self-quarantine in an effort to slow the spread of the deadly virus. Of course, people can still communicate with the outside world in any number of ways while cooped up in their homes, but communicating and having shared experiences aren’t the same thing.

Get through coronavirus quarantine with Amazon’s deep discounts on Kindles

%name Get through coronavirus quarantine with Amazon’s deep discounts on Kindles by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Deep discounts on popular products are beginning to dwindle on Amazon as the company shifts its focus to shipping mainly essential items for the next few weeks.
  • Amazon is a deals company first and foremost though, so it will continue to offer great deals on some of its most popular products even as it focuses mainly on things like medical supplies and food.
  • On Monday, the retailer kicked off a big sale that slashes the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite to their lowest prices of the year so far.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is picking up pace in the United States, with more than 15,000 confirmed cases as of the time of this writing. That’s believed to represent only a fraction of the actual infections out there because tests are still in such short supply and testing is still so limited. We all need to do our part by staying indoors in our homes and avoiding contact with anyone outside our homes unless it’s absolutely necessary. We all need to shop for food, for example, and some people with jobs that are deemed essential still have to go to work. Beyond that, however, we should self-quarantine as much as possible.

All that time spent indoors can make it easy for family members to get on each other’s nerves, so it’s important to be certain that we all get enough alone time. And there is perhaps no better way to spend that alone time than by reading a good book. That’s why Amazon is running a terrific sale that slashes its two best-selling eBook readers to the lowest prices of the year so far. Hurry and you can pick up an all-new Kindle reader for just $59.99 instead of $90, and the $130 waterproof Kindle Paperwhite is on sale for $94.99. And when we say “waterproof,” we definitely mean waterproof and not water-resistant. You can literally read it underwater if you can hold your breath that long!

Note that the prices above are for the 8GB versions with special offers, but Amazon’s 32GB models are discounted as well, as are the versions without special offers. That said, you should definitely go for the versions with special offers since you save money just because they display offers on the lock screen that you never look at anyway.
