  • A bizarre rumor that cocaine can cure or prevent a coronavirus infection began to gain traction online.
  • The false claims were accompanied by fake news stories, further fueling the spread.
  • Eventually, the rumor gained enough momentum that French officials had to address it, explaining that the claims were indeed false.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Coronavirus infection COVID-19 has no available vaccine or cure. Like the flu, once you have it, managing symptoms is the best thing you can do. However, that hasn’t stopped some from falsely claiming to know the “cure” for the infection and taking to social media to spread false claims. One particularly odd claim recently gained enough attention that it forced authorities in France to address it.

As Business Insider notes, the claim that cocaine could cure a person of a COVID-19 infection was shot down by the French government. As strange as it seems, the alleged “cure” gained a lot of traction on sites like Twitter, with images of fake or Photoshopped news reports tallying many thousands of likes and comments.

Amazon Prime Video is available free of charge in Italy’s quarantined coronavirus hot zones

%name Amazon Prime Video is available free of charge in Italy’s quarantined coronavirus hot zones by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Italy is one of the four major coronavirus hot zones in addition to China, Iran, and South Korea, and the government decided to quarantine parts of Northern Italy to prevent further infections.
  • More than 16 million people will be stopped from traveling, although thousands have escaped the quarantine fleeing to neighboring counties or the southern provinces.
  • Those forced to stay indoors for the following weeks will be able to access Amazon Prime Video free of charge on their devices.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

With 366 dead out of the nearly 7,400 infected, Italy is one of the worst places to be when it comes to avoiding the coronavirus infection. The northern part of the country has been hit the hardest, and it all started some two weeks ago when the first cases were reported in the region.

The number of infections surged rapidly, and it got worse with each passing day. The Italian hot zone likely contributed to the spread of the disease in central Europe, with neighboring countries reporting increased coronavirus figures in the days that followed the outbreak in Italy. The country on Sunday shut down Northern Lombardy, including Milan and 14 nearby provinces, with the quarantine set to stay in place until April 3rd.

UPDATE: Since the writing of this article, the entire country of Italy has been put on lockdown.

Big Tesla Model Y leak reveals key specs

  • Tesla’s Model Y is set to be a crossover version of Tesla’s popular Model 3.
  • The dimensions for Tesla’s Model Y recently leaked for the first time, as part of a major specs leak.
  • If all goes according to plan, Model Y deliveries will begin later this year.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

2020 is poised to be an incredibly busy year for Tesla. That, of course, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that the company seemingly becomes more ambitious with each passing year. While the company’s initial master plan — as laid out by Elon Musk — was set to conclude with a mass market EV we now know as the Model 3, the company’s product roadmap today is impressively expansive.

Aside from ongoing Model 3, Model S, and Model X production, Tesla in the near future is preparing to introduce the Model Y, a next-gen version of the Roadster, the Tesla Semi, and last but not least, the Cybertruck. The first new Tesla vehicle of 2020, however, will be the Model Y, a vehicle that is essentially a crossover version of the wildly popular Model 3.

Google location data turns innocent cyclist into burglary suspect

%name Google location data turns innocent cyclist into burglary suspect by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Google collects location history on Android devices, and that data can be accessed by law enforcement agencies with the help of so-called “geofence warrants”.
  • That’s what happened to an Android user who was at the wrong place at the wrong time, which was enough for police to consider him the prime suspect in a burglary in the neighborhood where he’s been biking for months.
  • He was eventually cleared, but that involved having a lawyer contest the warrant in court and ensure the police were convinced he wasn’t the perpetrator.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Google collects a treasure trove of information about all Google services users to serve better ads. Many appreciate the trade-off. In return for personal data that can be monetized with online ads, they get excellent Google services that work more effectively the more Google learns about your life. Google Assistant is one such example. Maps is another service that’s directly dependent on Google’s ability to collect data.

But it turns out that Google’s oft-criticized data collection policies have an unexpected side effect: Location history data might just turn you into the prime suspect for a crime you didn’t commit.

iPhone sales in China dropped by more than 50% due to the coronavirus

%name iPhone sales in China dropped by more than 50% due to the coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • iPhone sales in China plummeted in February as the coronavirus kept demand low.
  • Apple anticipated a slowdown in sales and last month adjusted its revenue guidance for the quarter.
  • As the coronavirus continues to spread, there’s no telling when iPhone demand and production will return to normal levels.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Apple’s iPhone sales in China last month were markedly lower on account of the coronavirus, according to a new report from the South China Morning Post. This, of course, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for two reasons. For starters, iPhone production was limited on account of factory slowdowns. Secondly, Apple retail stores in China last month were closed for long stretches of time.

Coupled with the fact that many individuals in China are still avoiding going out to public places whenever possible, iPhone sales in China last month were unusually low.

Samsung vs. Apple: New book promises tell-all history of one of tech’s great rivalries

%name Samsung vs. Apple: New book promises tell all history of one of tech’s great rivalries by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Samsung and Apple have been fierce rivals in the smartphone game for years, each paying intensely close attention to what the other is doing and then strongly insisting that they do no such thing at all.
  • A new book set to be published next week, Samsung Rising: The Inside Story of the South Korean Giant That Set Out to Beat Apple and Conquer Tech, promises a riveting account of the competition between each company as they climbed to the top of the global smartphone market. The book will be out on March 17.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

As far as revealing anecdotes go, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that offers a more apt summation of the years-long battle between Samsung and Apple than one that Geoffrey Cain includes in his new book Samsung Rising which is set to be published next week.

As a kind of rally-the-troops move to remind Samsung who they should consider their Public Enemy #1, Samsung at one point resorted to delivering truckloads of apples to its various offices. Employees were then encouraged to grab an apple from the piles that were placed in breakrooms and to take a bite out of it as the company’s smartphone battle against the iPhone raged on. The physical act of taking a bite out of one Apple was meant to represent the never-ending quest to take a metaphorical bite out of another much bigger apple. “We had one objective,” an anonymous Samsung executive is quoted as saying in the book, which will be published March 17. “Beat Apple. I’m not kidding you.”

Coronavirus is forcing New York state to make its own hand sanitizer

%name Coronavirus is forcing New York state to make its own hand sanitizer by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The state of New York will be making its own hand sanitizer in the wake of shortages and price gouging due to the coronavirus outbreak.
  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the product is highly effective thanks to its 75% alcohol content.
  • The hand sanitizer will be provided to places like school and government buildings as well as prisons, but may be sold if shortages continue.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The coronavirus outbreak has caused a shortage of many popular sanitizing products, especially in areas where the virus is threatening to spread quickly. Cleaners and soap, as well as hand sanitizer, are highly sought after items. In New York, the shortages are so bad that Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that the state is now manufacturing its own hand sanitizer rather than trying to buy it from vendors.

At a press conference, the governor noted that supply shortages and price gouging are what prompted the decision to begin manufacturing the product. The sanitizer will initially be supplied to government entities and places like schools and prisons.

With the coronavirus outbreak likely to get worse better it gets any better, people are taking additional precautions to lessen the chances that they become infected. Working from home, washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and carrying around hand sanitizer when going out are all common methods of keeping yourself safe, but what you might not realize is that the one object you put your hands on as often as anything else you own might also be the dirtiest. I’m talking about, of course, your phone, and you should really think about cleaning it.
