There are so many smart home devices out there that we absolutely love. From Echo smart speakers and Sonos sound systems to smart light bulbs, smart thermostats, smart light switches, and more, you can find wireless connectivity and “smarts” in so many different things these days. Heck, you can even get a smart faucet that lets you control your sink with Alexa, or a little $38 box that lets you control your garage doors from your Android device or iPhone. How cool is that?!

There are indeed a million different smart gadgets out there. But for every smart device, there’s a device you probably already own that doesn’t have any smarts. That’s where smart plugs come in, like Aoycocr 15A Mini Smart Plugs.

Earlier this week, we told you about an awesome sale on one of the all-time best-selling smartphone accessories we’ve ever covered. It’s called the Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera, it’s down to its lowest price ever right now, and if you’ve never heard of it you’re really missing out.

Here’s how it works: first, install the free companion app on your iPhone or Android phone. It guides you through a simple setup process that takes about a minute to complete, and then your smartphone is transformed into a camera that can seriously see almost anywhere. That’s because the device connects wirelessly to your phone, and then you can snake the semi-rigid camera into just about anything. It’s 11.5-feet long, and it’s waterproof so you don’t have to worry about liquid damage.

The picture beamed to your iPhone or Android is far more clear than you might think, and there’s even built-in lighting for use in the dark. Apart from just using your phone as a remote viewfinder, you can also record video or snap still images. That said, please don’t use this awesome little gadget to do anything creepy.

As if all that isn’t already enough, there’s another way the Depstech WF010 camera is super useful. In the box, you’ll find a few attachments that connect to the end of the camera. One is a hook and another is a magnet, which means you can use the WF010 to grab things like keys and jewelry that you drop into tight spaces. If you’re ever accidentally dropped your car keys through a sewer grate, you understand just how useful this sort of gadget can be.

The Depstech WF010 Wireless Borescope Snake Camera is already a steal at its normal retail price of $35.99, but Amazon is has a 20% coupon right now on the product page that chops the price down to just $28.79. This is your last chance to pick one up at this price before the deal ends, so don’t miss out.

Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X are both marching toward the next-generation console war right now. I would’ve laughed if you had told me a few months ago that I would be saying this now, but for the time being, Microsoft has an obvious edge. Sony absolutely crushed Microsoft in the current-generation console battle, with PS4 sales that have exceeded 110 million units and about doubled estimated Xbox One sales. A few months ago when PS5 and Xbox Series X leaks started picking up steam, it seemed like we were headed for more of the same following their releases ahead of the holidays in 2020. There was so much hype surrounding the PlayStation 5 and it seemed like almost no one was talking about the Xbox Series X, which was only known at the time as Project Scarlett.

Now, things have definitely changed. Sony was rumored to be planning a PS5 event sometime in February, but that obviously didn’t happen. Now, with coronavirus wreaking havoc and industry events being canceled left and right, it’s unclear when Sony will make its first big round of PlayStation 5 announcements. Meanwhile, Microsoft has already revealed its new Xbox Series X console design, confirmed all the key specs, and even discussed some of the console’s exciting new capabilities that will push home gaming far beyond anything we’ve seen on current-gen gaming rigs. Sony has a ton of catching up to do, and we expect the next big wave of details to come in March. We don’t expect Sony to share any information about PS5 pricing at that time though, but we have some interesting thoughts to share on that front.

Research shows Gmail’s auto email categorization is a hot mess for political campaigns

%name Research shows Gmail’s auto email categorization is a hot mess for political campaigns by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

For years now, Google has been using an algorithm to automatically sort through the influx of Gmail emails and categorize them according to their purpose. Google can tell emails apart. That’s why some of them go to spam, some of them are identified as malicious, and some of them are sent to the promotions folder that you might have enabled on your Gmail account. The feature is useful for sorting through unwanted emails and tossing out emails that don’t require your attention. But new research shows that the email categorization algorithms that Google is using are a hot mess for political campaigns in a big electoral year such as 2020.

Pokemon Sword & Shield Mewtwo Max Raid event is live – and Amazon’s discounting both games

%name Pokemon Sword & Shield Mewtwo Max Raid event is live – and Amazon’s discounting both games by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you have a Nintendo Switch, you should definitely be aware that a new Max Raid event has begun in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. First of all, they’re the two hottest Pokemon games out right now. Second of all, everyone’s talking about it. To help celebrate Pokemon Day, the Legendary Mewtwo will appear in Max Raid dens for a short amount of time, and three starter Pokemon will join him: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. If you manage to defeat them you’ll get some great rewards, and people are going nuts chatting about it on social media.

Of course, none of this matters if you’re in the dark because you don’t have Pokemon Sword or Pokemon Shield.

Everyone knows how fun Pokemon games are, and events like this new Max Raid are awesome ways to add new experiences to the games following their initial release. But you obviously can’t appreciate that if you don’t own either title, which is perhaps why Amazon is currently offering the first discounts we’ve seen in a long time on both titles. Each one typically costs $60, but you can save up to $10.50 if you buy them today. You’ll find Pokemon Sword for Nintendo Switch on sale for $49.49 right now on Amazon, while Pokemon Shield for Nintendo Switch can be had for as little as $54.14 if you dig into the “other sellers” section and you don’t care about Prime shipping. These deals definitely won’t last long though, so get them while you can and be sure to check out the Max Raid event!

There are also plenty more Nintendo Switch games on sale today with even deeper discounts, so be sure to check them out on Amazon before these deals are done.

If it were not for the coronavirus outbreak, we’d have seen the Apex 2020 at MWC in Barcelona, Spain, but Chinese smartphone maker had to unveil the phone via a press release that doesn’t do it any justice. That’s because the Apex 2020 sounds like vaporware right now, considering some of its outlandish features. And, in many ways, that’s what it really is, as this phone isn’t going to be available for sale. The smartphone of our dreams feels closer than ever, but we still can’t have it, and that’s because several of the technologies required to make it happen haven’t matured. But the Apex 2020 isn’t just some good-looking concept phone a designer put together and then jotted mind-boggling specs and features next to digital renders in a YouTube clip. Vivo has used the Apex series for a few years now to demo its latest innovations, including wilder ideas. Then, some of those inventions made it into future Vivo phones, which will probably happen with some of the incredible Apex 2020 features that Vivo is advertising.

Artists nowadays have sophisticated tools at their disposal with which to make their art, but there were no iPads or tablets 36,000 ago. Prehistoric humans used caves for art, and the Chauvet Cave happens to be one of the most important prehistoric art sites in the world. It’s also closed to the public, so you can’t just stroll over to the Ardèche department in France to visit it. What you can do, however, is explore the entire exhibition using augmented or virtual reality thanks to Google’s Arts & Culture project.

Google moves Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 production from China to Vietnam due to coronavirus

%name Google moves Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 production from China to Vietnam due to coronavirus by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google is speeding up efforts to shift its product manufacturing process away from China, something that got kicked up a notch last year thanks to the US-China trade war and is now an even higher priority as a result of the coronavirus outbreak that originated in China. This led to Google’s Pixel 4 phone being manufactured partly in Vietnam, with the company planning to repeat that again this year with its new low-cost Pixel 4a as well as its next flagship model.

That’s according to anonymous industry sources who confirm that Google is moving farther away from its default posture of making almost all of its smartphones in China, where the latest data shows more than 78,000 cases of the coronavirus having been reported in mainland China to-date. Per Nikkei Asian Review, Google has even gone as far as asking suppliers to look at the feasibility and potential cost of uninstalling some production equipment in China and shipping it to Vietnam.

It was only a few days ago that a US company announced it had developed a coronavirus vaccine candidate and was rapidly approaching the human testing phase. That company, Moderna, says it has already provided the US government with samples of the vaccine for further evaluation and could move to human testing soon with results coming by July.

Now, with the entire world scrambling to come up with solutions to stop the spread of the virus, another company is throwing its hat into the vaccine ring. Novavax, a small biotech company based out of Maryland, says it is making significant progress on its own version of a COVID-19 vaccine and plans to begin human testing within months.

One of Apple’s biggest events of 2020 is coming up – will coronavirus ruin it?

%name One of Apple’s biggest events of 2020 is coming up – will coronavirus ruin it? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’re only two months into 2020, and already a growing handful of major tech industry events have been completely scuttled thanks to the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, which the latest data shows is responsible for more than 82,000 cases worldwide and more than 2,800 deaths at the time of this writing. Earlier this month, for example, Mobile World Congress organizers announced the cancellation of this year’s event, which is the largest mobile trade show in the world and where some of the biggest names in tech traditionally show off their latest and greatest products.

Meantime, major attendees like Microsoft have started to pull out of the Game Developers Conference that, as of right now, is still set to kick off March 16, though that’s still subject to change. Along those same lines, organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics say they’re looking at the possibility of canceling the games outright, should the virus not be contained by the time they’re set to begin in July. And today, Facebook said it’s nixing its F8 conference and, instead, is planning to host a series of virtual gatherings and events that will be announced at a later date. All of which now brings us to Apple.
