All smartphones have a great built-in feature that you’ll hopefully never use. That’s a variation of Find My iPhone that Apple introduced years ago that lets you get a hold of a lost or stolen device. So if one should receive Find My Mobile notifications on their device, one would clearly worry that something may have happened to their devices. That’s exactly what happened a few hours ago when Samsung pushed out a mind-boggling notification via the Find My Mobile app that reads “1”.

In our continued efforts to get human-caused climate change under control, carbon dioxide emissions are a big target for elimination, and for good reason. Carbon dioxide actively contributes to global warming, slowly causing our planet to heat up and causing all manner of terrible side effects along the way.

However, there’s another type of gas that is doing its own fair share of harm, and humans might be responsible for far more of it than we initially thought. It’s methane, and a new paper published in Nature suggests that mankind should focus on curbing methane emissions sooner rather than later.

Each new foldable phone that launches proves the technology just can’t match our imagination right now. We want these things to be ultraportable smartphones with big, durable screens, and we want them to be affordable. The foldable phones we’ve seen so far can’t meet all those demands.

Most of them are bulky when folded, and most of them have durability issues that affect the two components that turn a regular phone into a foldable: the hinge and the display. Smartphone makers have already developed plenty of innovations for both components, but more work is needed. The Motorola Razr and Galaxy Z Flip prove that foldables aren’t nearly as durable as we want them to be. We have reasons to question the hinge of the Razr, and the phone’s display can peel off, apparently. On the Flip side (see what we did there?), the hinge isn’t as dust-resistant as we thought, and the screen can scratch because it’s plastic, not glass.

A newly published German-language book titled App Store Confidential certainly doesn’t sound problematic for Apple, but according to an English translation of the books’ description, which is available to buy now on Amazon, the book purports to offer an intimate look behind-the-scenes at one of Apple’s most important businesses.

The company’s proprietary app marketplace started off with just 500 apps in 2008, and over the following decade, it grew to amass sales twice that of McDonald’s. “But few know how the App Store works. Until now,” the book’s description teases. It goes on to hint at peeling back the mystery surrounding how an app becomes successful and even “App of the Year,” as well as developer do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when working with Apple.

But if Apple gets its way, you won’t be able to read this book at all.

If humans want a larger presence in space we’re going to have to have a good bit of help from robots. At least that’s what NASA and Western Australia are betting on, and they’ve just agreed to partner up on a new robotics development center that will begin working on technology that will build and control some of the most advanced hardware ever sent into space.

The project is part of AROSE (Australian Remote Operations for Space and Earth), which aims to be the control hub for robotics systems deployed to space to construct everything from Moon-orbiting space stations to structures on the Moon and perhaps even Mars.

You don’t have to search very hard in our archive of stories here to find tons of examples of Android apps behaving badly. Everything from apps forcing adware on you to apps stealing personal data and credentials, logging into your Google and Facebook accounts surreptitiously, and so much more (with examples here, here, and here). It’s clear that as adept at Google is at software, the search giant still has a problem with the ability of apps to sneak into its proprietary app marketplace, masking their malicious intent.

The company has been taking incremental steps toward reversing that tide, with another one having been announced today — and this one is a move to require developers to get approval from Google going forward if they want to be able to access the location data of a user in the background.

Apple earlier today rolled out the second developer beta of iOS 13.4, an update which includes a number of intriguing new features. While iOS updates this far removed from September have historically consisted of bug fixes and security enhancements, Apple with iOS 13 is taking a more measured approach. In other words, rather than just roll out a big feature-dump with the first iteration of iOS 13 and then pick up the pieces later, Apple this year is holding off on some features until they’re a bit more polished.

If you’re using Microsoft’s Office suite on your laptop or desktop, then chances are you already have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint installed on your phones and tablets. If you do, you should delete them right away, and replace them with Microsoft’s brand new, universal Office app that features all three productivity apps. A group of researchers from McAfee recently demonstrated how manipulating a speed limit sign can cause a Tesla in Autopilot mode to behave erratically. Specifically, researchers placed a tiny sticker on a 35 MPH speed limit sign and, as a result, both a 2016 Tesla Model X and Model S in Autopilot mode interpreted the speed limit to be 85 MPH. In turn, both vehicles started to accelerate to 85 MPH.

The experiment, which was obviously conducted in a controlled environment, helps illustrate some of the inherent challenges associated with achieving Level 5 autonomous driving. While the underlying technology can improve by leaps and bounds — and it has over the past few years — there’s no way to fully account for a range of external factors. Notably, the margin for error when driving around in a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds is simply too small — and the risk of injury too great — to make fully self-driving cars practical, in my opinion.
