Flying in the time of coronavirus is an absolute nightmare

  • Air traffic has collapsed over the past month or so in a historic and unprecedented decline due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The pandemic has wiped out almost all business for air carriers that have resorted to flying what are essentially ghost planes with just a handful of passengers.
  • Here’s one account of what passengers can expect for the few of you who are getting on planes right now amid the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Believe it or not, there are still some people who are getting on planes and flying right now amid the coronavirus pandemic, despite the fact that airports everywhere are virtual ghost towns. A month ago, airlines had started flying nearly-empty planes with just a handful of passengers on them, and the TSA was screening as few as 83,000 passengers a day, down from more than 2 million during the same point in 2019. Further underscoring the unprecedented moment the country is in, all commercial US airlines by May 11 will for the first time require passengers and crew to wear face masks.

Reading all this, though, you might be tempted by a particular thought — if practically no one is flying right now, wouldn’t this actually then be one of the safest times to fly right now? There will probably never be fewer people on planes and in airports than there are right now, so your risk in terms of picking up germs and, god forbid, the coronavirus, is practically nothing right now, right?

This controversial coronavirus study could speed up vaccine research

%name This controversial coronavirus study could speed up vaccine research by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Coronavirus vaccine development is advancing at a rapid pace, but a viable drug might not be available to the general population until early 2021, in a best-case scenario.
  • A more controversial human trial may speed up development: Challenge trials.
  • The World Health Organization has come up with guidelines for deliberately infecting volunteers with COVID-19 to see whether a vaccine candidate is effective and safe.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Coronavirus vaccine research is off to a great start, as more than 115 teams were working on drug candidates as of mid-April. Several of them have shown promise in lab testing and have reached various phases of human trials. If everything goes well, the first COVID-19 vaccine could be ready to roll out this fall under emergency use authorization. The general public could get access to it as soon as early 2021. For most such drugs, the theoretical estimates sit at 12-18 months. That’s still much faster than other vaccines, but it may still be a long wait. And once the first vaccines are ready, we’ll have to wait for governments to manufacture them in large quantities

There is a speedier way to go about vaccine development, however, but it’s a controversial one because it comes with increased risk. That said, the World Health Organization (WHO) isn’t against vaccine challenge trials, and issued guidelines for vaccine makers that want to speed things up.

Dr. Fauci is going into self-quarantine over potential coronavirus exposure

%name Dr. Fauci is going into self quarantine over potential coronavirus exposure by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, has become a familiar, comforting presence to Americans as the COVID-19 pandemic has dragged on for weeks now.
  • Fauci, who’s also the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is currently preparing to quarantine himself after possibly coming into exposure with a White House staffer who’s tested positive for the coronavirus.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The health expert who’s become the public face of the US response to the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, is preparing to begin what he describes as a “modified” self-quarantine after potentially coming into contact with the novel coronavirus.

Fauci, who directs the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in addition to being a member of the White House coronavirus task force, is doing so after telling CNN that he’s made a “low risk” contact with an unnamed White House staffer who’s tested positive for the virus. What makes this news disconcerting is that two additional chiefs of federal health agencies playing a role in the coronavirus response — Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Dr. Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration — are now doing the same.

Tax deadline extended again? White House considering another delay, to the fall

%name Tax deadline extended again? White House considering another delay, to the fall by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The $2.2 trillion coronavirus-related stimulus legislation passed by Congress in March, which set aside billions of dollars for direct cash payments to most Americans, is one example of the unprecedented moment the US finds itself in right now.
  • Here’s another: The tax deadline for 2020, which had already been pushed from April 15 to July 15, might get delayed for a second time.
  • There are reports the White House is considering whether to push the deadline again, to the fall or even later.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

I have probably written some variation of this phrase more times than I can count over the last month or so, but here is yet another indicator of the completely unprecedented moment the US now finds itself in thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

Already, you’ll recall, the Trump administration decided to push back the normal April 15 tax deadline to the summer this year — a no-brainer if you ask me, considering we’re perilously close to Great Depression-level territory thanks to the wave of job losses and business closures in recent weeks. On Friday, the Labor Dept. reported that employers shed more than 20 million workers last month, pushing the jobless rate in the country to 14.7%. In light of all this economic devastation, the original idea was that taxpayers would have until July 15 to file their 2019 taxes — and that they wouldn’t have to pay a late-filing or late-payment penalty, either. The tax deadline was also part of a raft of emergency moves that included sending out direct cash payments to most Americans.

‘The Mandalorian’ season 2 is bringing back Boba Fett

%name ‘The Mandalorian’ season 2 is bringing back Boba Fett by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The Mandalorian season 2 is currently scheduled to launch on Disney+ in fall 2020.
  • According to a new report, fan-favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett will join the show this season.
  • Boba Fett will be played by Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Disney+ has continued to rack up subscribers in the months since its launch, topping 54 million at last count, but the excitement surrounding the streaming service has certainly died down in 2020. The Mandalorian was one of the only scripted originals available on launch day, and not many new shows have joined it since. In fact, the most significant additions to the service in 2020 have been Frozen 2 and Onward, both of which were added to the streaming library much earlier than Disney had initially planned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, some of the other highly-anticipated originals, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, weren’t able to wrap up production before the pandemic brought everything to a screeching halt. But the good news is that filming for The Mandalorian season 2 is complete, and now we have another reason to get excited.

Japanese asteroid probe discovers an incredible secret

  • Japan’s Hayabusa2 asteroid probe snapped images that reveal the space rock had a close encounter with the Sun.
  • Scorched rock was present on the asteroid’s surface, appearing red in spectral analysis and indicating extreme heating over a short period of time.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

Japan’s Hayabusa2 asteroid probe has already accomplished a lot. After launching in 2014 and spending several years traveling to intercept the space rock known as Ryugu, it made many key observations and even snagged samples of the asteroid before departing and heading back to Earth.

The biggest discoveries are sure to be made once scientists can get their hands on the asteroid rock samples. In the meantime, researchers are studying the data that the probe sent back over many months, and they just discovered something very interesting about Ryugu. Apparently, the asteroid has had some uncomfortably close brushes with another object in our solar system: The Sun.

Largest coronavirus study to date reveals mortality risk factors

%name Largest coronavirus study to date reveals mortality risk factors by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Scientists still don’t have all of their questions answered yet about the coronavirus, including why so many people are dying from it when it seems to barely affect other infected people at all.
  • A new study from the UK, based on data from millions of patients, purports to be the largest such study yet of the virus and presents an authoritative look at the risk factors of dying from COVID-19.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the coronavirus at the heart of the pandemic that’s still sweeping across the globe, including why it leaves some infected people asymptomatic while ravaging the bodies of (and eventually killing) other people. Scientists, however, are racing to learn as much as they can about the deadly virus so that viable treatment options in the form of therapeutics and eventually a vaccine can be identified sooner rather than later.

A new study in the UK purports to be the largest such analysis to date and incorporates data from 17.4 million UK adults to give what might be our best look yet at the risk factors associated with dying from the coronavirus.

Leakers have revealed when Sony will finally unveil the PS5

%name Leakers have revealed when Sony will finally unveil the PS5 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Sony is reportedly planning to unveil the PS5 at some point in early June, according to several sources.
  • There may be a PlayStation 5 event soon, but things are in flux because the novel coronavirus health crisis is far from being resolved.
  • A well-connected reporter said that PS5 news is coming in early-to-mid June if everything goes well, while a different leaker keeps saying that June 2nd is the date gamers have been waiting for.
  • Visit BGR’s homepage for more stories.

The ongoing coronavirus health crisis changed has changed everything in our lives in the past few months, so we’ll never know whether Sony had planned to show the PS5 design at the rumored February 2020 event. The COVID-19 outbreak prevented Sony from attending trade shows as well, including gaming events. In fact, Sony was one of the first tech companies to pull out of big shows like MWC, so we never expected the company to announce any press conferences of its own. In the months that followed, Sony chose to speak very little about the PS5. We saw the PS5 specs get confirmed during an incredibly dull online event that may have come in response to Microsoft’s aggressive Xbox Series X reveal plans. And then Sony took the wraps off the brand new DualSense controllers, with some rumors saying it only unveiled the new device to get out ahead of leaks.

The PS5 details that fans want most are still a mystery, but they may be unveiled soon. There’s increasing chatter that Sony will host a virtual PlayStation 5 even in early June, assuming COVID-19 doesn’t complicate things even further.

  • You can opt in to the new Facebook design at any time in your browser.

Last year at its annual F8 developer conference (remember conferences?), Facebook revealed a new design for its desktop website. Over the past few months, Facebook has been letting some users opt into the new design in certain regions, but on Friday, the redesigned website launched globally, giving everyone with a Facebook account the ability to check out the new look and the additional features of the updated desktop experience.

If you want to see what the new Facebook looks like, all you have to do is head to Facebook.com on a browser, click on the down arrow at the right side menu bar at the top of the page, and look for the menu option that reads “Switch to New Facebook.” You can swap back at any time from the same menu.
