Scientists pretended to be addicted to heroin to figure out why so many addicts die

The United States is in the midst of a growing opioid crisis, and some cities are experiencing it worse than others. Understanding what addicts go through can be difficult for medical professionals and scientists, so when researchers wanted to better grasp the plight of heroin addicts seeking treatment options they had to pretend.

In a new study published in Annals of Internal Medicine, a research team explains how they attempted to understand what heroin users experience when they try to get clean in some of the country’s heroin hotspots. Put simply, admitting you need help doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to get it.

Russia hates HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ so much that it’s making its own series

%name Russia hates HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ so much that it’s making its own series by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

HBO’s recently-ended Chernobyl mini-series is easily one of the best shows of the year — and so much better than Game of Thrones season 8, by the way. The show tells the real story of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster as experienced by the ones who had to deal with the consequences.

Unsurprisingly, Putin’s Russia doesn’t like it. Not only that, but a Russian network is making its own Chernobyl, which will be a fictional story based on a conspiracy theory that claims the CIA — who else — sent an agent to the Chernobyl zone to carry out acts of sabotage.

Scientists invent foam that can stop a bullet as well as steel can

%name Scientists invent foam that can stop a bullet as well as steel can by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When designing armor capable of stopping a bullet, the two most important factors are weight and resistance to penetration, and they’re often at odds with one another. A thick steel plate can stop many projectiles but at some point the weight becomes impractical for most applications.

Now, new research into a novel type of material is showing promise as both an option for powerful protection and a weight-saving replacement for heavy metal plates. It’s a composite metal foam which saves weight but seems to offer protection similar to solid steel, and it could be the next big thing in vehicle armor.

iOS 13 will effectively kill 3D Touch – one of the iPhone’s most underappreciated features

%name iOS 13 will effectively kill 3D Touch – one of the iPhone’s most underappreciated features by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With a whole lot of fanfare, Apple in 2015 introduced 3D Touch to the world and positioned it as one of the flagship features of the iPhone 6s. Years in the making, 3D Touch was supposed to change the way we used our smartphones by completely adding a completely new and intuitive method of UI interaction.

Nearly four years after its introduction, however, it’s fair to say that 3D Touch never quite managed to live up to the hype that accompanied its unveiling. While the feature — which presented users with a variety of contextual options based on the amount of pressure applied to the display — was technologically impressive, it was not readily discoverable or even available on all iOS devices. In light of that, we’re now seeing reports that Apple with iOS 13 has effectively axed the feature altogether in favor of a long press alternative.

GM and Michelin are working on a prototype tire design they unveiled this week which will start being tested on Chevy Bolts later this year — and, more importantly, is intended to eliminate the prospect of blowouts and flat tires once it’s put into use on production cars. The design was introduced this week at an event in Montreal and is being called the Uptis, which stands for Unique Puncture-proof Tire System.

NASA has a new plan for getting the InSight lander digging again

%name NASA has a new plan for getting the InSight lander digging again by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s InSight lander is having some problems. The robot, which has already delivered some very interesting observations since arriving on Mars late last year, can’t seem to get one of its most important tools to work as planned.

The instrument, called a “mole,” was designed to hammer itself deep under the Martian surface and monitor temperature changes. NASA figured it would be able to push itself as deep as 16 feet into the Martian crust, but the consistency of the soil has made that difficult. In fact, the mole has only made it around a foot deep, and now InSight’s science team has come up with a new plan.

The NSA is urging Windows users to update their computers ASAP

If you’re a Windows user who has yet to update your operating system after the discovery of the Bluekeep vulnerability a few weeks ago, then maybe a warning from the NSA will be enough to spur you on.

Bluekeep is a vulnerability that’s been compared to the devastating 2007 malware WannaCry that wreaked havoc on computer systems around the world, resulting in millions of dollars’ worth of damage. There’s concern that systems running older versions of Windows like Windows 7 are especially vulnerable to Bluekeep.

You might have missed the most promising new feature of iOS 13

%name You might have missed the most promising new feature of iOS 13 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

iOS 13 might not be the huge leap forward that some Apple fans anticipated, but it does include a range of upgrades that will greatly improve the iOS experience. One that we’ve yet to highlight is called Optimized Battery Charging, and while it doesn’t sound all that exciting, it might be the best addition of iOS 13.

As MacRumors explains, Optimized Battery Charging can be found in the Battery Health section of the Settings app. “To reduce battery aging,” the description reads, “iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it.” And by doing so, it can extend your battery’s lifespan.
