Netflix price hikes are complicating T-Mobile’s ‘Netflix on Us’ promotion

T-Mobile announced a series of changes to its most popular phone plane on Thursday, one of which potentially means a price increase if you’re on a plan that includes a Netflix subscription

One of the side-effects of the Netflix price increase that’s been rolling out in waves recently is that T-Mobile unlimited data plan customers — for whom the carrier started throwing in a basic Netflix plan two years ago as an extra sweetener — might have to start paying more to account for that increase. We say “might,” because starting in July, if you’re a T-Mobile unlimited customer you can either pay an extra $2 a month to keep what you’ve got, or you can essentially downgrade your plan to accept a more basic Netflix subscription.

New report claims some Snapchat employees spied on users

%name New report claims some Snapchat employees spied on users by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A new report from Motherboard reveals that Snap employees in the past have abused internal tools in order to glean information about user emails, user location data, and other types of sensitive data. What’s particularly worrisome is that some Snap employees were said to have used these tools to take a look at photos and videos saved by users.

Citing two former employees, the report does make a point of noting that Snap has very stringent rules in place to prevent employees from abusing their power with respect to monitoring user behavior. Still, nothing is fool-proof, which is to say it’s easy for employees tasked with keeping the site safe and secure to use their security privileges in bad faith.

Discovery of one billion year old fungi changes our understanding of life on Earth

%name Discovery of one billion year old fungi changes our understanding of life on Earth by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When scientists search for species that lived hundreds of millions of years ago they’re not always just looking for ancient animals. Life on Earth has changed a lot over time, but sometimes a new discovery reveals a few things that have stayed largely the same.

In a new paper published in Nature, researchers reveal the discovery of tiny microfossils dating back at least 900 million years — and perhaps even as far as one billion years — that prove that some forms of fungi were alive and well much farther back in Earth’s history than previously thought.

Samsung’s next foldable smartphone may avoid the pitfalls of the Galaxy Fold

%name Samsung’s next foldable smartphone may avoid the pitfalls of the Galaxy Fold by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The age of the foldable smartphone stumbled right out of the gate as multiple Galaxy Fold review units suffered from serious malfunctions before the device could even make it to market. As a result, Samsung was forced to delay the launch of its first foldable smartphone (which still doesn’t have a release date).

With that in mind, it’s worth noting the Galaxy Fold won’t be Samsung’s last foldable phone, and this week, Patently Mobile dug up a recent Samsung patent for a device with similar ambitions, but a completely different design. Rather than have the main screen fold in on itself and slap a tiny screen on the outer shell, the device described in the patent would feature a “fold-out” form factor, with the main display on the outside.

Rotten Tomatoes introduces ‘verified’ ratings as a way to fight trolls

%name Rotten Tomatoes introduces ‘verified’ ratings as a way to fight trolls by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Rotten Tomatoes has announced a change to its audience score system as part of a multi-step plan to fight trolls which has been underway for a while now.

If you’ll recall, there’s been an uptick in trolls rushing to the site to “review-bomb” movies like March’s Captain Marvel, which was hit with a barrage of negative Rotten Tomatoes reviews from users before it had even be released. At one point on the Friday morning of its release weekend, the movie already had earned an abysmal 33% Rotten Tomatoes audience score thanks to trolls who’d left more than 58,000 reviews.

NASA needs your help to bring an asteroid sample back to Earth

%name NASA needs your help to bring an asteroid sample back to Earth by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission has already accomplished a lot since arriving at the space rock known as Bennu late last year. The spacecraft successfully entered orbit around the asteroid, scanned its surface with a laser, and learned a lot about its surface. But its mission is far from over, and eventually, the probe will need to pull off a daring sample-gathering maneuver in order to return material from the rock’s surface back to Earth.

The mission team was surprised to see just how rocky the surface of Bennu was, and the debris-strewn outer layer is going to complicate the already-tricky sample-gathering task. Now, NASA is asking for our help in deciding where it should touch down.

This is what the Galaxy Note 10 might look like

%name This is what the Galaxy Note 10 might look like by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With May almost over, we’re some two months away from the next major Android phone launch. The Galaxy Note 10 will likely drop in early August, and it’ll come in as many as four versions, according to recent reports, including two differently sized 4G phones, and their respective 5G counterparts.

The Galaxy Note 10 will not share the Galaxy S10’s design, reports keep telling us, but it won’t feature a perfect all-screen design either. We’re still looking at an Infinity-O hole-punch screen design and a multi-lens camera on the back of the Note 10, but both the rear and selfie cameras will have different placements.

PS5 and PS4 players will be able to play games together online

Although it could be months or even years before we actually see the next-generation home gaming console Sony has been teasing in recent weeks, the picture of the PlayStation 5 is beginning to take shape. In the same week that Sony showed just how fast the load times on its next console would be compared to the PS4 Pro, the company has seemingly confirmed that cross-play between PS5 and PS4 consoles will be possible.

During a Q&A session at Sony IR Day 2019, as PlayStation executives spoke about backwards compatibility and its relevance to the next generation, deputy president John Kodera revealed that “cross-generation the community can enjoy the games together.” In other words, PS5 and PS4 players can game together.
