The battle for streaming subscribers is really starting to heat up in 2019. There used to be a massive gap between Netflix and every other service out there, but that gap is slowly beginning to narrow. Now that Disney has acquired, well, pretty much everything, its upcoming Disney+ streaming service will likely become Netflix’s biggest threat the instant it launches later this year. The prospect of exclusive access to Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and the first-ever original shows created by Marvel Studios will be enough to rope in millions of people. On top of that, wildly popular shows like Friends are leaving Netflix as networks begin to launch their own streaming services. Will it be enough to pull people away from Netflix, or will they keep paying for access to all of Netflix’s critically acclaimed original content? Only time will tell. Hardly anyone needs a reminder of how pervasive the problem of robocalls has become, or how ineffective the action against them has been up to this point. Indeed, the number of such unwanted calls soared from 29 billion in 2016 to almost 48 billion last year, according to an estimate by YouMail Inc. that’s also been cited by the Federal Communications Commission. And speaking of the FCC, it received almost 6 million complaints about unwanted calls last year, according to a report the agency issued earlier this year.

This leads us to a new proposal from FCC chairman Ajit Pai that paves the way for a potentially big step up in the fight against these calls that leave consumers so outraged.

SpaceX is continuing its busy year with another rocket launch, and this time it’s sending its own suite of communications satellites into Earth orbit that it hopes will facilitate the spread of high-speed internet networks into remote areas. The mission, called Starlink, requires the deployment of lots and lots of pint-sized satellites, and SpaceX will send a full 60 of them into space tonight.

As with most SpaceX launches, the company will be live streaming the entire event from start to finish. You’ll be able to watch the rocket launch, attempted return of the Falcon 9 to SpaceX’s drone ship, and eventually the deployment of the satellites themselves.

The idea of a “Quiet Mode” in Uber — which actually started out as a meme a few years ago — has now become a reality. According to the company, Uber passengers now have the ability to request a quiet ride, which is to say that they won’t have to answer probing questions from overly friendly or inquisitive drivers.

It’s a nice feature but the downside is that it’s not rolling out to all of Uber’s slate of ride options. Rather, “Quiet Mode” will only be an option for Uber Black and Uber Black SUV rides which can often be anywhere from two to three times more expensive than a regular UberX ride. In other words, if you’re intent on having a peaceful and otherwise silent ride, you’ll have to pay for the privilege.
