Forget the Galaxy Fold, the world’s first foldable laptop is so much cooler

The foldable smartphones are already here, and by here we mean that we’ve seen a bunch of them in the past few months, although only a couple are ready to hit the market. In reality, the Galaxy Fold has been delayed indefinitely, as Samsung has to fix the screen and prevent it from breaking. The Huawei Mate X, meanwhile, is yet to hit stores. But forget about foldable phones, because the next big foldable thing is already here. Well, kind of. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 prototype you’re about to see will launch in the first half of 2020 for an undisclosed price.

Google just told us why the Pixel 3a has a headphone jack, and it’s exactly what you think

%name Google just told us why the Pixel 3a has a headphone jack, and it’s exactly what you think by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Google’s newest Pixel phone is a mid-range device that delivers great features for its price. But make no mistake, this isn’t a real alternative to some of the best 2018 and 2019 flagships out there, iPhones included. By the way, don’t consider trading your old iPhone for a Pixel 3a model, unless that iPhone is iPhone 6 or older. The Pixel 3a lacks the build quality and the top hardware of the Pixel 3, but it also packs a feature you won’t find on the Pixel 3 phones. That’s the headphone jack, which Google removed from its Pixel flagships back in fall 2017.

AI is now better at predicting mortality than human doctors

%name AI is now better at predicting mortality than human doctors by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

As scientists continue to toil away at creating machine learning algorithms that will one day enslave humanity save us all, artificial intelligence researchers have discovered that computers are outpacing human doctors in a number of important areas. We’ve already seen the ability of AI to spot things like cancer, and a new study reveals that a digital brain may also be better at predicting overall mortality and specific conditions such as heart attack with greater accuracy than a trained individual.

The research, which was presented at the International Conference on Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT, suggests that we may be fast approaching a day when artificial intelligence works hand-in-hand with medical professionals to anticipate life-threatening problems before they occur.

NYT: Conspiracy theories that 5G phones cause cancer originate from Russia

%name NYT: Conspiracy theories that 5G phones cause cancer originate from Russia by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After so many years of talking about the miracle that 5G will be for everything tech-related, it finally happened: 5G is here. “Here” is Korea, the US, and Switzerland, for the time being, although more and more countries will be getting 5G coverage in the coming months.

What that means is that you’ll need new, more expensive phones to get on 5G, and pay a little extra on your monthly cellular bill. But it doesn’t mean that 5G will give you or your children cancer, or hurt anyone’s health in any other way. If you’ve heard any of that lately, it’s all a conspiracy theory originating from Russia in an attempt to reduce the gap when it comes to 5G deployment.

Spotify might be the next app to add Instagram-style Stories

%name Spotify might be the next app to add Instagram style Stories by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Once companies started to notice the runaway popularity of ephemeral “Stories” within apps like Instagram and Snapchat, the format started showing up everywhere from Facebook to Tinder and YouTube as part of an evolution of the infinitely scrollable permanent feed in favor of content that disappears after a time.

Facebook, for its part, believes in the format so much that the world’s biggest social network has shoehorned Stories into Messenger and the main Facebook app, hoping to duplicate at least some of the success the format has enjoyed within Instagram. And now it looks like Spotify will be the next app to bring this kind of Stories-like format into its wheelhouse.

Watch the ‘Game of Thrones’ cast try to pretend they’re excited about season 8

%name Watch the ‘Game of Thrones’ cast try to pretend they’re excited about season 8 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Game of Thrones season 8 has been a mixed bag for many viewers, if all the reactions I’m seeing every week on Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit are anything to go by. That’s not to say that there haven’t been great moments, or that it’s easy to bring the biggest, most expensive show of the decade to a satisfying conclusion, but many of the choices that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have made aren’t landing for some fans.

But it’s not just the fans that are struggling to make it through this season. Someone has sliced together a collection of clips from interviews and red carpet appearances in which various cast members of the show — from Kit Harington to Peter Dinklage — in which they seemingly express their disappointment with the direction that the show has taken in its final season. After last night’s episode, it’s honestly somewhat cathartic.

New study suggests the Moon may be shrinking

%name New study suggests the Moon may be shrinking by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Earth isn’t the only place that “quakes.” Rocky planets and moons regularly experience similar movements, and faults can form between massive chunks of crust on other worlds the same as they can here on Earth. The Moon is one place we know that experiences those kinds of shifts, and new research suggests that it might actually be making the Moon smaller over time.

The study, which was published in Nature Geoscience, explains how the cliffs observed on the Moon’s surface hint at a cooling spell that occurred after the Moon formed. As it cooled, it “shriveled like a raisin,” and large cliffs formed on the surface when the Moon’s crust was compressed. These regions, known as thrust faults, may still be growing today, and the overall size of the Moon may be shrinking as a result.

Another Tesla may have spontaneously caught fire in Hong Kong

%name Another Tesla may have spontaneously caught fire in Hong Kong by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Whether you’re a fan of Tesla or convinced that the company is destined to fail spectacularly, it’s impossible to deny that Tesla manufactures some of the safest cars the automotive world has ever seen. With that said, it’s a bit peculiar that we’ve seen a handful of stories involving Tesla vehicles spontaneously catching fire for no apparent reason over the past few months.

The latest incident comes to us via the Tesla Motors Club forum where a member relays that a 2016 Model S in caught fire out of the blue while parked in Hong Kong. Details surrounding the incident — which hasn’t been officially confirmed, we should note — still remain a bit hazy. And while we’d ordinarily gloss over such a seemingly incredulous story, the reality is that we’ve seen a handful of similar stories hit the news over the past few months.
